A Day at The Races

On October 10, Members of the Briar Bunch, their friends and families enjoyed a great afternoon at Santa Anita Race track. The day was marked by some great races, including some that were qualifying races for the Breeder's Cup. Even more enjoyable was the great conviviality and the scrumptious barbecue treats, as well as great side dishes. Most did not come away big money winners but all were winners from the fellowship of a sober day at the track. At least one of the Briar Bunch managed to pick the top four horses in order for which he gets the forecasting prize of the month. We make a visit to Santa Anita twice a year so plan to join us in the spring for our next outing. One doesn't have to bet to have a great day.

A Day at Dodgers Stadium

On August 23, thirty Briar Bunch members, families and friends went to Chavez Ravine to see the LA Dodgers take on the Chicago Cubs. Some members were able to consume more than one Dodger Dog, which was of more interest to them as the game progressed, since the Dodgers wound up losing. Although the day was a warm one, our seats were in the shade. This is an annual event of the Briar Bunch and the all tickets were sold quickly. Watch for the announcement when next year's game date is scheduled and buy your tickets early to insure a place at the old ball game.

The Bowling Report

The yearly Briar Bunch Bowling Event took place this past Saturday and a great time was had by all, bowling or not. The bowling was fun, the lunch was good, and the fellowship was even better. We reserved 8 lanes, and bowled for 3 hours. We also put bumpers up and created a kids lane for the real little ones, but only 4 participated. We had Pizza and soda along the way, as well as cookies provided by Bruce. We had a total of 28 bowlers, but that doesn't include all of the folks that came out just to support the event. Thank you to everyone who participated, volunteered, or supported this event and we look forward to seeing you again next year. We awarded prizes for Men's high score (David 243), Women's high score (Christina and Kathy tied @ 147), Adults low score (Christa 61), Children's high score (Oliver 87), Children's low score (Riley), and a Dutch 200 game (David 243). I personally had a blast chairing this event so I'll be doing again in 2010. Thank you for the opportunity to serve. --Kris C

Giving Back

The Briar Bunch in an effort to help all newcomers who suffer from our disease of addiction has purchased 4 books and 2 workbooks for the Briar Unit Library. The books purchased were the Narcotics Anonymous Books (like the Big Book), How and Why (to help with the 12 Steps and Traditions) and the NA Workbook (which is an aid to doing the writing of the 12 Steps of both AA and NA).

In donating these books to the Library it will help all patients who enter the Chemical Dependency Unit. The books were received by Chemical Dependency Counselor Esby Garcia, who was most appreciative.

Meet Newcomers!

Upon your next visit to the Briar Unit, say hello to all the newcomers, then visit the North Hallway and see whats going on with the Briar Bunch! Thanks to all the hard work Vicki!
